Employers Need To Get Out of The Benefits Box

Let’s face it; offering benefits to employees is very, very expensive. According to the Society of Human Resources (SHRM) 2010 Employee Benefits report, businesses are spending on average 48% of the employees’ annual salary on benefits. For example, if the average salary in your organization is $41,667 dollars, the company is contributing an additional $20,000 for benefits per employee.

Here is a radical thought. Do not pay directly for your employee benefits programs. Give each employee a benefits stipend and let them choose from an assorted list of entirely voluntary benefit programs.

At this point, most of you are saying benefits are expensive but necessary for employee satisfaction and talent acquisition. How do you measure the impact of your benefit program in these two areas? I’m pretty sure you don’t measure it at all and it is just an assumption that the programs are required to compete. Do not get me wrong. I am not advocating you treat your employees with any less due respect. The majority of employees do not value the standard benefit package. In other words, you as the employer do not get any credit for offering it. It is my personal belief that both of these areas would be greatly enhance if the company gave each employee a $12,000 benefit allowance (or 28% of the employees’ annual salary) to pick and choose the voluntary benefits that are most compelling to them.

For some, a vacation benefit might be very high on their list. For others, pet insurance would be the way to go.

With the uncertainly of where Health Care Insurance costs are going, it is imperative that companies get out of the benefits box and get creative to provide their employees with the best possible benefits program.

We do know that Health Care Insurance Plans are becoming so expensive that companies of all sizes simply cannot afford to offer this essential benefit to their employees. We also know that a public health care option is coming, in what shape or form it will be when the program gets completely implemented we do not know.
